Make a Wish & What a Bittersweet Farewell

• Artist Statement

  Make a Wish reflects the feelings of despair I felt after losing my grandmother. I often begged for just one more chance to see her, so I could say my final goodbye and thank her for everything. Deep down I knew it was not possible, but I did not stop. In every way I could, I wished for one last time with her.

  The placement of the text portrays how I felt, isolated and lonely, surrounded by vast, open, and empty space. The work’s title at the top symbolizes my wishes, slowly floating away from me.

  What a Bittersweet Farewell views a goodbye from two vastly different perspectives—one bitter and one sweet. As I crafted this piece, I wanted to truly capture the thoughts and feelings of both characters simultaneously at the moment, which resulted in two mirror-image columns.

  My main goal was to make the poem brief but meaningful, just like goodbyes.

• Creative Statement

  Creativity allows me to explore who I am and it pushes me to learn to love myself. It allows me to express my thoughts, emotions, and self. Creativity gives me a voice—one that is truly my own—and in a world full of darkness, with just one idea, it allows me to write a story of hope.
