Missed Connections

As my time in high school comes to an end, I often find myself wondering about the future of my relationships. What does “growing apart” really look like? What happens when people have different expectations for a relationship? What is the difference between leaving and being left behind?
This play explores these questions from multiple perspectives. Using documentary theater techniques, I studied the speech patterns of my family and friends to create realistic voices for my characters. I wanted Jessie and Sage’s relationship to be intentionally ambiguous because the emotions explored in this piece can occur in all types of relationships. Whether in a platonic or romantic relationship, many people have had similar experiences to the one depicted in this play, and I want the audience to be forced to sit with the other person's perspective, even if it's uncomfortable.

In our constantly moving world, creativity allows me to slow down and explore my emotions. I believe that the purpose of art is to build empathy and understanding, therefore, creativity gives me hope for a better future.
