This flash nonfiction piece came to me during my first year at a summer camp. It was in a time where I felt as if the world had rotated too fast and I had gotten dizzy. I was not grounded, missing all the support systems I feel like I have. To cope with these feelings, I listened to music. Music was always something that helped connect me to my mom, and I hope to express that in this piece. I hope to show the importance of music, but also the deeper importance of having comfort in times of change. I hope that you can see that the core of this piece is not a song, but a relationship between a mother and child.
I initially struggled with finding how to express this. What I settled on is encompassed in my final paragraph, explaining the vast array of memories that one song can contain. I chose to show an abridged version of our relationship within those lyrics, using song lyrics as headers to moments in time. I hope that the rest of the work can speak for itself. As someone with a speech impediment for much of my life, writing has helped me express my emotions, ideas, and opinions in a way no other format could. In an increasingly scary world, I am able to process my muddied, melodramatic feelings and share them with a wider audience.
