My submission is an opinion article I wrote in my advanced journalism class and had published in my high school’s news magazine. I found inspiration for this piece from my own frustrations with my school’s toxic college culture. I felt defeated by the high expectations surrounding college at my school and I found that when I tried to express this, I had difficulty putting it into words. Through writing this article, I was able to not only explain my struggles in a productive way, but I was also able to release my emotions in a healthy way. Additionally, I was able to show other students at my school that they weren’t struggling alone. The feeling of helping others through being vulnerable in your own work is incredibly rewarding and a huge reason why I write.

I often find that speaking aloud about my emotions can be difficult for me, as it’s hard for me to articulate my thoughts into words. Writing is a safe space for me to develop and communicate my inner thoughts and feelings in a productive way.
