• Artist Statement

  How does fast fashion impact the environment and the well-being of employees? My goal for this piece was for each choice to be reflective of common fast fashion practices in an effort to call out their malpractice and open the viewer’s eyes to the negative impacts of fast fashion. I sewed a “trendy” garment in a way that is poorly done with several loose threads and loose-fitting fabric. Additionally, I thrifted shirts from fast fashion companies and repurposed the fabric along with a thinner, more transparent fabric. To showcase the impact on workers, I used the cyanotype process on the white fabric to create hand-prints where the fabric would have been touched when sewn together. I want the viewer to consider how each item of clothing in fast fashion was touched by an individual who worked hard and was poorly compensated.

• Creative Statement

  To me, creativity can mean both artistic and/or innovative thinking and problem-solving. In my work, I combine both by thinking of creative approaches that implement synthesis of materials, process and ideas.
