There has always been a fine line between our endless desire for more clothing and the harsh reality of its production and disposal. Fast fashion offers affordable clothing to meet our endless demand, but at a cost: textiles filling landfills or polluting water. As this harmful practice continues, it becomes increasingly important to raise awareness about the severe consequences fast fashion has on our planet. This piece represents my interpretation of these current issues in the form of a dress. Starting from the bottom up, piles of garments are slowly taking over the true natural parts of our planet. Like vines climbing walls, long notions such as zippers and shoelaces spread over the leaves and flowers on the dress, symbolizing how clothing overconsumption is gradually encroaching upon nature. The leaves and flowers represent elements of Mother Nature–water, land, and the ozone layer–impacted by fast fashion.

Being exposed to fashion and sewing for most of my life, I see creativity as an expression of one’s beliefs and mind. Fashion is a way for me to translate my scattered thoughts into forms of clothing. I utilize my creative ability to convey real world issues or everyday wear.
