Improvised interpretation of the feeling of ”hope” in the midst of hard times

On October 7th, 2024, one year since the massacre in Israel, my congregation came together to mourn the loss but also look toward a possible hope that could be found in the future. My part in the service was to play a piece of music that could connect with the congregants emotions and bring them into that sense of hope. I improvised this piece because I felt like that would be the only honest way to express the feelings that we were all feeling in that specific moment on that specific day. The piece is based around a consistent Bb that persist throughout the piece and despite facing many different chord voicings and possible dissonance, the Bb still stays standing and makes it’s way throughout the entire piece. The Bb represents hope that even in the darkest times can still persist because it is strong when we are together.

Creativity is one’s willingness to do the ”wrong” thing for the reason that it just feels right. Creativity is the combination of inspiration and intuition. It’s what makes something new feel interesting and what makes something old feel timeless. It’s what makes songs unique even though theres only 12 notes.
