One thing I find most beautiful about poetry is its ability to communicate profound and meaningful ideas in a short space—an idea that was initially unfamiliar with when I primarily wrote fiction. I turned to poetry to express the stronger, intense emotions that were difficult to draw out into a longer story. In these poems, I explored different aspects of my identity as a second-generation immigrant, as a woman, and as a daughter. Most of my poems are formed from singular lines that often later serve as their titles.

To me, creativity is the art of seeing and interpreting potential in an original aspect. While it’s almost impossible for an idea to be completely original, I believe that one’s interpretation of an idea changes between each person, and that creativity allows them to wield these ideas in new ways.
