Change is intrinsic to life, an integral part of what makes us human, and Metamorphose emphasizes this. Blue and green hues highlight the girl’s eyes: one human, representing the individual, and the other, a surreal imprint upon a moth’s wing as if suggesting that we are products of every transformation we’ve endured. The juxtaposition of emotional indifference to the depiction of pulling at skin—a physical longing to literally reform oneself— illustrates the acceptance of change as unavoidable, and thus, we unconsciously embrace its discomfort. I chose to depict change as a drawing for its inherent irony, for even if the moth meant to fly or the eyes meant to blink imply the inevitability of change, here they’re rendered permanent, forever fixed yet paradoxically representing the very concept of it.
