Standchen is a song that I have worked on for two years. I have presented it to various teachers and masterclasses, each providing different feedback and suggestions for improvement. I think one of the most important parts of my artistic process is having every piece still be a work in progress, even those I perform. I still work on songs that my teacher gave me from eighth grade, and they’re still not perfect after all these years. For this song, my biggest goal was to have different expressions throughout, especially because it has a repeat. Songs with repeats can get really boring if there isn’t variety between verses, and that was something that I tried to incorporate into my performance.

Creativity means taking a song, making your interpretation of it, and performing it in the way you see fit. One of the things I love about being a singer is taking on a complex character and choosing what aspects of that person I want to portray.
