As a newcomer from Guatemala, my art explores the emotional journey of separation from my family, especially my mother, and the sense of isolation that comes with adapting to a new culture and language. I express this feeling through cocoon-like clothing that envelops me in memories, symbolizing the experience of being suspended between two worlds. While San Francisco’s beauty is captivating, it often feels foreign and unwelcoming, leaving me longing for the vibrant colors and lush landscapes of my homeland. The traditional Guatemalan designs and rich patterns in my work represent my heritage, providing comfort as I navigate this new environment. Through vibrant colors and intricate patterns, I explore themes of displacement, belonging, and the tension between preserving my roots and embracing my new life. My art reflects the bittersweet nature of the immigrant experience and invites viewers to reflect on their own journeys of identity, family, and home.
