A Letter I'll Never Send

Artwork Statement This letter says what you're not supposed to say about grief: sometimes you're relieved. Sometimes you're even happy. Everyone expects you to be sad forever, but what if your mom's death also set you free? I wrote this because I'm tired of pretending grief is just one thing. It's messy and weird and sometimes you feel guilty for feeling okay. Sometimes tragedy gives you an identity. Sometimes suffering ending is a good thing, even if admitting that makes you sound like a terrible person. My therapist probably thinks I need more sessions after reading this. But honestly? Grief isn't this pretty, noble thing we see in movies. It's complicated and selfish and confusing.

Creativity to me is finding truth in the uncomfortable spaces, saying what you're not supposed to say and making it beautiful anyway. It's permission to be honest when honesty is messy. It's turning the things that hurt you into something that helps you understand yourself better. Retry
