Alone in A Busy Store

Meena D.

I used both blue and black waterproof Indian ink for line work with a thin dip pen, and to color I used a mix of water color and gouache paint. The character was illustrated on separate paper and glued on, with gold leaf used as a halo

  • This piece is the third installment in a larger sustained inquiry, meant to explore an experience of feeling separate or othered from one’s peers. In this piece I chose to convey othering both through size and perspective and coloring and medium. I used lighter metallic colors for the character to make it stand out from the dark blue background, to further this effect the character is illustrated on separate thick watercolor paper and glued on, raising it away from the rest of the piece. As well as this use of color and physical separation I employed perspective, making the already small fairy like character shrink in comparison to the imposing legs of people, the character is squished uncomfortably between people’s legs, like it doesn’t quite fit into the scene.

  • Creativity to me means finding your unique way to express the feelings and ideas that would otherwise be stuck inside your head or not say.
