Arroyo Breath

Hayes S.

  • Arroyos are timeless features of Bay Area ecology, referring to creeks that dry up for several months of the year. “Arroyo Breath” tells the story of Arroyo de la Purísima, a San Mateo creek historically shaded by Redwoods until the area was logged in the 1910s. Arroyo de la Purísima has withstood centuries of change in the Bay Area, reflecting the environmental impact of urbanization on our ecosystems.

  • Creativity is the spontaneous burst of thought quickly dashed upon the page, escaping the expectations of a final product. Bay Area forests are a prominent source of creativity for me because I find myself thinking most spontaneously and unconventionally. My forest thoughts are creative because they are just for me.
