Ballad of Found Time

Noah G.

  • This piece takes inspiration from the sounds of Duke Ellington and other big band masters, but also from Jazz-Pop artists. The horns section has heritage in Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke" and his other hits, and the string section harkens back to soul singers like Sam Cooke who were pioneers in adding strings to their songs. The gentle drums come from Norah Jones' oeuvre. I wanted my work to have a certain liveliness to it, so I opted to record my live piano playing without any distortion or dampening. I added MIDI strings, drums, bass, horns, and trombones to convey a sense of shared meditation, of communal reflection, of excitement in motion. I hope to convey the joy of connecting with other people, and the happiness that comes from finding time to spend with them, in this piece.

  • Creativity means exploration of the universe and of the self. When one embarks on the journey of exploration that is creativity, one starts to define what it means for something to be beautiful, meaningful, triumphant, or tragic. We then assign music to these definitions to create and shape community.
