Being Human

“Being Human” galloped into my mind some idle Thursday in December, whinnying so loudly that I couldn’t do anything but attend to it. I was 90k words through the first draft of my debut novel, but the idea clung to me like a lost child. And so, I paused my novel to write a play about a clueless android, navigating the horrors of modern-day adolescence. With the help of Westmont Theatre, I made my directorial and playwriting debut on a high school stage in September 2025. PLOT SYNOPSIS: After a kooky father creates an android as a gift to his cynical daughter, a coming-of-age comedy ensues. This android, Bianca, navigates modern-day adolescence with wide-eyed wonder: shenanigans ensue. But when Bianca accidentally humiliates one of her newfound friends, June, she becomes the target of a revenge plot. Sparking violently, she wonders whether or not “being human” is worth the effort.

Creativity is intrinsic to our identity as humans. It’s our instinctual addiction to telling stories; consistent between musical theatre extravaganzas of today to smudged cave paintings of our origins. Not exclusive talent that only select people can wield—creativity is as necessary to our happiness as breathing. Creativity is being human.
