Carmela Sanchez Medel

  • I spent this past summer in San Marcos Arteaga, Mexico. A small town of about 700 people in the northwestern mountains of Oaxaca that welcomed me with food, music, games, and stories. Wanting to take some portraits of elders in the town, I explored with my grandpa, taking photos of his friends and family. Her name is Carmela Sanchez Medel, an 85-year-old woman who's seen earthquakes, droughts, wars, and more. I wanted to tell her story with power and dignity while still showing textures of age, culture, and environment. A type of beauty that often goes unnoticed.

  • Creativity to me is how I express thoughts and feelings through art. It's a place where I can communicate what I can't always say out loud. Through art, I can share these emotions with others, and at the same time create something visually appealing.
