• Artist Statement

  For this photograph, I was inspired by the painting Othello and Desdemona by Alexandre Marie Colin, specifically, Colin’s representation of Desdemona. I wanted to focus on the abuse Desdmona suffered at the hands of Othello, as well as Desdemona's characterization throughout the play as naive and clueless. I like how the original painting captures this really heavy moment, after Othello murders Desdmona, where Desdmona lies, truly helpless. This connects to present day domestic abuse as it captures this “afterwards” moment, illustrating the consequences of not taking action or preventing abuse. I hope viewers will reflect on the effects of staying silent when they suspect abuse, as the consequences can be dire.
