Diary Entry

Oil paint on paper

  • This oil on paper piece explores self-criticism and our relationship with the mirror. My process began by experimenting with compositions that blended realism and total chaotic abstraction. Starting with a muddy wash, I painted the face using soft brushstrokes and vibrant colors to create a striking expression. In contrast, the reflection in the mirror is disfigured—painted by blending colors directly on the surface rather than my pallet, giving it a choppy, distorted effect. Inspired by a self-depricating diary entry I had created, this piece reimagines my bathroom as a space where emotional perception alters reality. The mutilated reflection represents the pain of self-criticism through a figure bent into uncomfortable and impossible positions to conform to her boxed mirror—her entrapper. By combining the real and the imagined, Diary Entry communicates how emotion and physical space becomes intertwined and inseparable, resulting in a warped sense of reality.

  • To me, creativity means having the courage to explore new and unfamiliar ideas. My art comes from a deeply internal place of self-reflection, so being creative requires me to engage with personal, uncharted emotions and subjects. I believe true creativity emerges when one can embrace both failure and honesty.
