Envy

This photo came from my first self portrait project called “What you DON’T see,” where I explore the hidden emotions I tend to hide from people. Envy is known as the thief of joy, and it’s something I’ve struggled with throughout high school as an immigrant. “There’s always a bigger fish (photographer) in the market” was what my dad told me when I said I wanted to study photography, and that line clung to me. Instead of inspiring me, it made me compare myself to everyone around me. In this piece, the broken grid mirrors how envy splits my self-image, pulling me in different directions. The harsh stare on the right shows the part of me trying to push through it, still wanting to prove I belong in the space I’m fighting for. This work captures the version of me that most people never get to see.

Freedom, something we can seek and let whatever is in our minds become reality. There’s no restrict In art even though you’re limited to a piece a paper.
