Feathers and Ribbons in Our Hair

Arthur K.

  • In Feathers and Ribbons in Our Hair, I wanted to encapsulate the difficulties that come with processing grief and growing up. In this short story, the main character goes through a lot of change as she learns to mature and become independent. Drawing loosely from personal experience, I tried to include a wild and even otherworldly imagination to represent how the main character thinks. Hair braiding isn’t a topic talked about frequently. With this piece, however, I wanted to shine a spotlight on one of the overlooked elements of interpersonal relationships and closeness with family.

  • To me, creativity is about putting unique thoughts and ideas out into the world through different, even unorthodox formats. Creativity represents the power to use one's imagination to construct realities and tell stories. With creativity, one isn't limited to what the world already has; they can expand what we know.
