Food Memories

Ceramics

  • This set is reminiscent of dinnerware I have at home, consisting of the pieces I use to eat shabu-shabu. Shabu-Shabu was my favorite homemade dish my grandma made when I was younger and is still one of my favorite Japanese dishes. I have been exploring the benefits and harms of nostalgia and memories as a whole in my artwork. This work is specifically a commemoration of cultural memories that I want to hold on to and share with others. Through this set, I am able to keep in touch with family and culture, demonstrating the benefits of holding onto memories. The design of the rice bowl symbolizes my Japanese (sakura flower) and Chinese (dragon) identities and the main bowl has a Corelle-inspired design that reflects my American identity. The designs are also different to preserve the food’s comforting qualities as dinnerware in my home does not all match.

  • Creativity to me is the willingness to explore and a mindset driven by curiosity. It allows us to reflect on and connect with ourselves and others.
