Grace in Bloom

This summer, I returned to China to visit my grandparents. My grandma is in her seventies now, moving more slowly, yet her love for painting remains steady. Outside the window, hibiscus flowers opened like soft pink lanterns. We sat together at a table, painting the way we did when I was little. As I worked on a small bird resting on a hibiscus branch, she watched my strokes with her familiar warmth. While I painted, she told me the story behind it. In Chinese tradition, hibiscus symbolize 幸福美满 — live a gentle and contented life. The bright-feathered bird carries wishes of 吉庆与平安 — hope and harmony. She touched the edge of my paper and said, “I hope your life feels like this.” In that moment, I knew the painting wasn’t just mine. It was her quiet blessing for my future no matter where I am.

To me, creativity is the quiet act of turning feelings into form. Painting with my grandma showed me how a bird can hold hope, and a flower can represent happiness. Art lets me preserve these meanings, transforming ordinary moments into small pieces of warmth I can carry with me.
