Grit and Grime

Minjun R.

Oil Paint, Graphite Pencil

  • The painting portrays a bustling Korean market, filled with vendors. Among them, only one shines. A grandma selling varieties of fresh seafood in her old ragged tracksuit. Her surroundings are filled with mud and waste, but through these circumstances, she works for survival. The grandma of the painting represents my real grandmother, who suffered numerous tragedies during the time of the Korean War. However, no her conditions and struggles, my grandma remained dedicated and steadfast with her work. Now, no one could deny her of success, as her journey reflects itself. Her lifelong effort bore its fruits, and this painting conveys that this applies to anyone. That hard work is unmeasurable through achievement, but only time and effort. That in the end, the efforts will bear their fruits. This painting encourages viewers to relentlessly pursue their dreams and never give up, as one day they will succeed.

  • Creativity is the ability to express one's story, life, and thoughts in an effective manner. In my art, I seek to showcase my experiences and personal ideas, and the extent to which I succeed at sharing and resonating these abstruse and personal ideas with others reflects my creativity.
