love through generations

Brianna S.

  • Oftentimes, families show their love not just through declaration, but through their sacrifices, through the patched jackets, homegrown crops, and everything that stands for what they are unable to say aloud. These poems explore that understanding that love is something that is offered even when it’s unspoken, and to recognize those sacrifices. Many generations give up parts of themselves so that their children can live through their dreams. A mother bends her own future to shape her child’s; a grandmother pours everything she has into her son’s education so he can step into a life she will never live herself. These sacrifices are quiet, often unnoticed, yet they are the persistent love that create the opportunities future generations get to have.

  • Creativity to me is more than just expression, but a way of living. It's taking the time to notice: the chipped mug my grandmother refuses to throw away, old high school notebooks my father keeps but never looks at, the small moments that mean the most.
