Oedipus’s Grief

Becca M.

Ceramic, paper, water color, cotton balls

  • Marble bleeding into color, this piece is meant to capture the emotion of Oedipus as he carved out his eyes in grief and shame. The vessel leans away from the viewer, baring his neck in a display of anguished submission. Using a combination of satin clear and soft white glazes, I attempted to replicate the sheen of marble on ceramic clay. Water-color soaked cotton balls in the hollow eye sockets bleed through the paper blindfold bandage, staining the vessels face. The hair texture was achieved by small individual pieces of wet clay layered repeatedly onto the head, then left to dry to maintain its delicate movement.

  • To me, creativity is the ability to harness an emotion or feeling into a thought, and then successfully bring that thought to life through words, action, or a physical medium.
