On the Other Side of the Fence: Visualization

Zoe W.

  • I translated the poem, On the Other Side of the Fence by Analise Chin, into a short film shaped by deliberate shot construction and rhythmic editing to explore how we often overlook the beauty already in our own lives. I use blur to mirror the fixation on what lies beyond our reach, letting what’s ours fall out of focus. The hyper-saturated footage of “greener” grass and a candy wrapper illuminates how easily we mistake shine for value, extending the poem’s critique of vanity. The stream shifts in levels of clarity to demonstrate how perspective changes what we think we see, while also disrupting visual patterns with appearances of wildlife to echo the poem’s surprises. Moving between open and enclosed shots allows me to mirror the poem’s emotional shifts as the final pan into the viewer’s own yard reinforces the central message: beauty is already here, if we choose to look.

  • Creativity is a catalyst for change that heightens my unique style and artistic impact. Through film, I hope to honor work like my mom’s as a nonprofit leader and my vibrant neighborhood by giving their stories visibility. Creativity allows me to highlight these communities and spark communal love and connection.
