Origami Bajutsu Samurai

Ryan L.

One sheet of 95cm wenzhou rice paper and methylcellulose

  • Origami has evolved far beyond the traditional crane into a medium for complex design and artistic expression, yet the core idea of creating form through folding alone remains the same. I designed and folded this sculpture from a single square sheet of paper with no cuts for my county’s AAPI art exhibit. My goal was to create a complex, multi-subject model while also focusing on a dynamic composition.

  • To me, creativity is working within constraints. Since origami design is inherently restricted to a square and only folds, creating expression from this seemingly simple medium comes from pushing those boundaries.
