Pines in Purple

  • This photograph was born from the quiet tension between wilderness and human presence, especially in such a beautiful hour of the day. It was below freezing outside and I was only wearing a simple sweatshirt. I must have stood out the for at least an hour, and I'm not sure how I resisted frostbite. Maybe it was because my mind was working so hard to find the perfect composition. The contrasting warm light from the cabins against the blanket of snow on the peak was in essence how I felt then. To be honest, I really wanted to go back inside, but I knew the light I was seeing then was something special. So, over that hour, where I was constantly adjusting my tripod and attempting to fidget with settings on my camera with fingers I couldn't feel, I stayed, trusting that discomfort was part of the process. And suceeded.

  • To me, in photography, creativity is a form of searching. I think that light either makes an image or breaks it. And I want to find the best possible light and seize the opportunity. So in some sense, that is my lifelong journey.
