Quartet No.3: A Young Girl's Fantasy

Kayi S.

  • This quartet piece, written for two alto saxes, piano, and bass clarinet, tells a story of discovering who you are. It starts with a sad, melancholy theme representing doubt and the fear of not reaching your dreams. As the music moves forward, the rhythm and energy builds, reflecting the moment when hope and confidence begin to replace hesitation. I originally composed it for my school quartet, and we performed it a few months ago. Writing for actual musicians helped me think about how each instrument could express a part of that emotional journey. The process mirrored my own growth: beginning in uncertainty, then slowly finding direction and motivation. I hope the piece brings comfort and encouragement to anyone on their own path of becoming.

  • To me, creativity means expressing the emotions and experiences that makes me unique, while still reaching others through something universal. In music, I can share feelings that are hard to explain in words, yet still connect deeply with people who recognize something of themselves in the sound.
