Clay

  • I made this piece after one of my previous cups was stolen and then returned broken. I had just gotten back from Japan and was inspired by their glazing techniques. Specifically, I was enamored by the ring of glaze they put around the rims of pieces. The main glaze I used was copper based, giving me the green-blue hue, while the ring was white glaze. The actual form of the cup is what I imagine the platonic ideal of a mug to be, and the handle was cut from a slab.

  • I think it means being able to solve problems when faced with challenges, finding new, untested ways to do so. I do pottery; when throwing a piece, I have an image in my head, and I have to figure out a way to coax the clay to take that form.
