Refuge

Anaya R.

oil paint, acrylic paint

  • This piece, Refuge, acts as a reflection on escapism, indifference, and privilege – ideas I have been grappling with during my years in high school. Overflowing and crumpled papers create a claustrophobic and busy environment in the top right of the piece. The use of high contrast is used to focus on the discomfort of the figure who turns away from the viewer as they cover their face. The high contrast in the top right also serves to pull away focus from the semblance of another drawer slightly below the primary one.

  • Creativity is the willingness to be bold and to show resilience when a personal way of thinking is challenged. When someone is creative they are pushing the boundaries of what is considered conventional by the standards of an institution or society in large.
