Rooted

Lyra O.

Oil Pastel on toned tan paper

  • This artwork is part of a collection which explores how gender affects opportunity in the jazz world. As a jazz trombone player myself, this collection stems from my experience with this topic. This piece plays metaphorically on gender stereotypes on instruments (ie females are more likely to play flute). Considering this with classic jazz instruments, this poses as a barrier between females and jazz. In my piece, the river flowing through the center dictates this barrier, while the trees are vague representations of instruments (clarinet on left bank, trombone, saxophone, trumpets on the right). The title of the piece "Rooted" (and the trees metaphorical meaning) is meant to show how society tends to "root" down stereotypes.

  • Creativity to me is the ability to create a world unique to yourself and your interests. It is the ability to think outside the box and to have the ambition to express something special and imaginative.
