Rough Waters

A. K.

  • This poem was inspired by Clint Smith's "Ode to the Only Black Kid in Class" for an English assignment. Inspired by my middle school experiences of feeling ostracized for my views, I decided to use the word, "mainstream", to mean an actual body of water; after that, I just went with the flow. I often thought back on those difficult memories to better capture the complicated emotions and thoughts in my writing. Diction was the most challenging part, as I meticulously chose every word to express my idea. Through writing my poem, I realized that what I had considered a terrible experience was one that had allowed me to mature. What ended with a broken friendship and destroyed innocence was also a chance to deeply reflect upon who I am and what I believe in, and decide whether they were worth standing firm for.

  • Creativity is the ability that all humans are born with to express one's ideas and emotions through a medium.
