Salt Self-Portrait

Nora D.

I used salt as a medium, sticking it to a black cardboard background with adhesive spray.

  • This was a final for an IB project in which my theme is emotion and portraiture. I researched artists to be in conversation with and chose Marlene Dumas for her abstract portraits of crying women. I used salt as a medium, making the connection from tears being salty. Originally I also took inspiration from the metaphor, “it left a salty taste in your mouth,” and abstractly incorporated it into a salt portrait when creating the mouth. I later scrapped the idea and went for a more realism approach.

  • To me, creativity is self expression and the contribution of original ideas and concepts. It is powerful and has the ability to change a person’s views and mindset.
