Scorched From Within

Angel R.

3d Sculpture made of Aluminum wire, Chicken wire, newspaper glue/water solution, Instant Paper Mache, and Fast Mache

  • My piece aimed to highlight the way mental and inner health, and often the self-destructive tendencies that come with it, can affect your outer self. Sometimes, it leaves you as merely a burnt-out husk of what you once were. I attempted to capture by creating my interpretation of a scorched log using 3d sculptural techniques. To me, this piece is quite personal, not only in the way its message applies to me, but the fact that every line, crack, paint stroke, and imperfection was entirely by my hands. This all began months ago by creating a large ‘cage’ or frame of sorts using chicken wire to create the overall dimensions (4-5 feet long, 2 feet tall). I then added a layer of papier-mache from newspaper to create a proper surface. Where I laid paper mache clay and manipulated it, using wooden hand tools to recreate the natural wood texture.

  • To me, creativity is a reflection of the self, how we feel in that moment where the spark of it hits us. It’s the culmination of all our past experiences, happiness, pain, sorrow, mistakes, and especially moments we regret. Yet it doesn’t have to be used to make another one.
