Swag Since ’42

Oil paint on canvas

This piece began as an elderly figure sitting down, but it slowly turned into something more. As we grow older, we tend to lose a lot of our self-expression, our unique style, and flair to fit into standards. Each brushstroke and color I added was a small celebration of personality that doesn't change with age. Every color of oil paint blended seamlessly, just like the years of our lives tend to do. I felt a lot of emotions while painting this, impatience, happiness, and amusement, as this figure had swag that outmatched my own. To me, this piece is a tribute to everyone who refuses to be defined by standards, and to the beauty of growing old with flair.

For me, creativity means taking an emotion or feeling and turning it into something new that others can form their own opinions and thoughts on. Creativity gives me the freedom to experiment with my supplies and express who I am on the inside.
