The Art In Understanding

Sidney H.

  • I believe understanding (oneself, others, the world) takes a kind of skilled creativity not everyone recognizes. I was once obsessed with trying to understand everything. My poem presents the concept of understanding as an art while also illustrating there is freedom in misunderstanding– Life was great when you were a kid unknowing how the world worked. Being told you’re understanding is great until you feel the need to understand what isn’t meant to be understood, or the need to seek understanding from others to feel valued. I could’ve been inside an unlocked cage and I’d choose to stay because I was someone who preferred to very least understand the shape of my chains. I thought freedom without purpose seemed no less than another prison. The desire to understand was the weight that chained me down from becoming who I am today, someone who realized the value of encountering misunderstanding.

  • One's organization of perception.
