The Blood Orange

Sabrina B.

ceramics/clay, glaze

  • The Blood Orange is metaphor for myself. The fruit, having the orange color peel on the outside, is surprisingly different than what one would expect on the inside. It's like me. I am creative and vibrant, but a stranger would just see a quiet person. In creating my artwork, I threw a teacup and saucer on the wheel. I then hand-built the orange tree on the saucer, and the handle of the cup. The tree's roots are soaking in the red color like water, symbolism of how who I am feeds into my life as I grow older, and bears new fruit for the future.

  • Creativity is a struggle for self expression and freedom in a world where there are rules and societal expectations. It's a way that I can show who I am, and have some say when I do not have control of my life.
