The Elusive Nest

  • Beautiful, fleeting, and frankly adorable, the hummingbird nestles herself into a delicate, silken nest. Surrounded by the blighted leaves of a California buckeye, she stands out with her emerald feathers and lichen-covered home. As humans, we rarely see hummingbirds for more than a few seconds, always in motion. In contrast, this moment reveals a bird at rest, a peek into a tranquil moment of their lives. While pushing through bushes on the opposite side of the Los Gatos Creek Trail, I froze when I spotted this tiny nest. I didn’t even know hummingbirds built nests. I was desperate to capture it, but the only lens on my camera was a 56mm. With no time to switch gear, I stretched over a narrow stream and extended my arms as far as I could, grappling my feet onto rocks in the stream. I ended up capturing this once in a lifetime moment.

  • Creativity to me means the ability for someone to express themselves artistically in a unique and tasteful way that others may not come up with themselves.
