The Seaside is My Cradle of Memories

Katelyn W.

Mixed Media: canvas cloth, scissors, twine thread, super glue, sand, matte medium, gel medium, sun prints, beads

  • This piece marks many firsts for me: my first large-scale painting, my first time incorporating sand and sewing elements, and my first exploration of true abstraction beyond my usual figurative style. I wanted to capture three moments of my life within a single composition—the top circles, strings, and threads symbolize my childhood self; the central figure surrounded by plants represents who I am now; and the stitched blue cloth at the bottom reflects my early high school years, still learning to piece life together. Experimenting with mixed media helped me express how memories, growth, and self-discovery intertwine over time. By layering textures and materials, I aimed to show how different versions of myself are connected through change. I hope viewers can sense both the continuity and transformation that have shaped me and my art.

  • Creativity means expressing my unique way of seeing the world by connecting ideas, emotions, and experiences in new ways.
