This piece showcases heroes throughout history, ranging from religious figures to comic book stars, politicians, protesters, and musicians. Feelings like guidance and control that these figures represent have stayed the same, even if the person or thing that embodies it has changed. The different layers symbolize time and the past has shaped those who came after and how those who influenced future icons were eventually hidden. I started this project without a plan for what I wanted to do, but through the elements that I was drawn to for the collage I was able to discover it. From there, I used oil pastels and markers to create images that helped hone the concept. This project opened my eyes to the fact that in a world full of people who inspire, everyone has a unique understanding of collective experiences, and that you are the only person who can express your perspective.

Creativity allows people to dream without boundaries and make their hopes a part of their reality, even if they don’t have the confidence to share it with the world. As someone who struggles with communicating what I understand, creating metaphors through my art makes a window to someone else's reality.
