Tutu/Happy Birthday

Alexandra B.

  • After unexpectedly losing one of my grandmothers (whom I was very close to), I wrote a poetry portfolio dedicated to her. I chose these two pieces, entitled “Tutu” (a definition poem) and “Happy Birthday” (a free verse poem), because they greatly encapsulate feelings often associated with grief—sadness, reminiscing, wondering, etc. These poems can be relatable to those who are dealing with, or have dealt with, similar situations, and bring comfort in knowing they are not alone.

  • To me, creativity means being able to express yourself artistically and freely. You can take emotions, ideas, fears, etc., and turn them into something. For me, my artistic expression is writing. That's where I am able to understand myself the best, and how I can convey my thoughts and feelings.
