Teen Poetry Slam Semi Finals | Youth Speaks Youth from all over the Bay Area compete to advance in the competition, become a finalist, and rep the Bay Area at Brave New Voices, a 4-day youth poetry festival and National Slam. CYA Spotlight Projectile Mind, Marley M. My piece was originally intended to display my struggle with stress, self image and ambition. The song, Headlock, by Imogen Heap accurately described my state of mind during this time. The lyrics, “You know you’re better than this,” are blunt and convert my mind into dance. Throughout the process, the constant dancing helped me cope with my emotions. The dance isn’t a full choreography, each clip is from a different improvised session to the song. This allowed me to display different parts of my mentality and their place as a whole in my mind. The choppy editing progresses into a steady flow, expressing the change in mindset the longer I danced. The flashes and change in location represent the consistent strain and intensity in which my mind functioned. But dance relieved me of responsibility and allowed my creativity to flourish, no matter how absurd it may seem. Watch Here!
