This poem is an enigma. The reader is left to probe around in the darkness, occasionally finding a paper limb or a butterfly. In the last two months, we’ve witnessed the dehumanization and murder of innocent human lives. We’ve witnessed the deprivation of natural human rights and freedoms on both Israeli and Gazan hostages. We’ve witnessed the erasure of voices and blackout on entire communities. We are all prisoners of mankind’s cruelty. This poem is proof that everything can be taken from us except for our inner freedom. We can have our flesh, our skin all stripped away from us, but we forever hold the freedom of choice: to choose not to submit to mankind’s cruelty, to choose to preserve sensibility and beauty and dignity, to choose to advocate and bring up the voices of those who are silenced. There is humanity in each of us to rebuild. In our daily fight for existence, there is liberty in each of us to seek justice and truth. It is an honor to bear witness to each other’s existence – so let us hold one another, however torn apart and naked we may be, with a commitment to our inner human liberty.
