My mom (the subject) is an incredibly hard-working person. As an operations manager, she often stays up late to work long after the rest of my family goes to sleep. Despite her demanding job, she always makes time for me, separating her work life from home life and allowing herself to be loose, silly, and present. This portrait is based on a photo taken on our last vacation, where she still had to work but made time to have fun with me. The unconventional 0.5 zoom angle breaks formal portrait norms, showcasing her playful and whimsical side–something many adults suppress. My mom has taught me that being weird and true to yourself is important, even when doing so is often looked down on as “juvenile.” As my dreaded college applications and future loom before me, she reminds me that success and happiness can coexist with silliness and authenticity.

To me, creativity means using my imagination to form ideas that resonate with me or the people I’m communicating with. Regardless of the medium, I make all of my creations my own by adding personalized elements and hope that my work will provide a new perspective to viewers, too.
