A Fleeting Moment

Charcoal on construction paper

  • My mom smiles as I come up to take a photo of her, embarrassed and worried that she doesn’t look good. She ties white and blue balloons for my middle school graduation. We never tied balloons for anything before, so this was a first. Thinking back on that brief night, I wanted to immortalize our fleeting happiness. First, I used a grid to map out the paper to the photo. Using blue construction paper as a mid-tone, I picked a corresponding color on the photo. I used black and white charcoal and to lightly sketch out my mom and the background. Using the grid, I filled up sections of the photo rather than going box by box. Through this drawing, I wanted to communicate to my audience the many emotions felt through growing up, mainly joy and excitement for the future, while also incorporating the use of blue for sadness.

  • Creativity means to conceptualize an idea originating from one's own thought or inspired by others, and then produce a work with that same concept, either physically (traditionally) or digitally. One's concept doesn't have to be super revolutionary in originality, but art tends to look vibrant with unique thoughts behind it.
