A Memory of the City; application for asylum; Theme for English 2A

Ever C.

  • These poems are formed from quiet moments that often go unnoticed, like standing in the city after rain, sitting alone in a dark room, or hearing sirens pass outside my window. I wrote them as a way to capture the moments where memory, anxiety, and identity overlap. Influenced by Safia Elhillo’s work, I used repetition, questions, and spiraling thoughts to emulate how her voice and mine move when overwhelmed or uncertain. The “city” becomes more than a place, but instead, a feeling, a sound, or a reflection of my imagination. In my writing, I explore fear, loneliness, routine, and anxious habits, like scrolling on my phone, counting minutes, or lining up pens. My artistic process focuses mainly on observation and honesty, which allows my personal moments to become more of a shared experience.

  • Creativity means seeing the world not just as it is, but as it could be. In my writing, I try to capture reality while weaving in my imagination, creating something both familiar and dreamlike.
