Ludwig van Beethoven's Sonata No. 7 in D Major, Op. 10 No. 3, part of the Op. 10 set dedicated to Countess Anna Margarete von Browne, reflects a period when Beethoven was gaining the artistic freedom to explore bolder ideas. In performing the first movement, I am drawn to its bursts of raw energy that feel both playful and rebellious. The rapid motifs demand precision while driving forward with unstoppable momentum. While learning this movement, I worked through its three sections: exposition, development, and recapitulation, imagining them as moments in a story that builds tension, transforms ideas, and finally returns home. I learned to articulate and create dynamic contrast, which emphasizes the movement’s excitement while giving each phrase a distinct character, ultimately allowing the story within Beethoven’s music to come alive for both performer and listener.

Creativity is the talent to transform ideas and concepts into something personal and meaningful. It can be expressed in many ways. On the piano, creativity to me is experimenting with phrasing, dynamics, and reimagining a piece written many centuries ago.
