Bella

Pencil and Color Pencil

  • Bella, a word meaning beauty, names the illustration. But what more is hidden to the eyes of the observer? My piece represents the complicated world of aesthetics and objects of desire. A girl is surrounded by flowers, while her hair is a network of mycelium and decay. Yet, the hands of the others pick away at the mushrooms and rot, perceiving all parts of her as a delicacy, a symbol of refinement. She's suffocating in her own wreath of flowery awards, but watches as the observer simplifies her encasement into a work of art. The strokes of pencil bleeding into color represents the conundrum of Bella - constantly existing between perfection and emptiness.

  • Creativity is a form of vulnerability and communication for me. It gives me a way to express my emotions and share my thoughts so that others can understand my words. I often struggle with communicating clearly and find that my message comes across much clearer in the form of art.
